I love to be loyal to as many hotel chains as possible, but unfortunately it is very difficult to reach an elite status if you have too many chains in your portfolio. You have to pick those that work out best for you i.e., work, free time, where you live etc. For me this means I have most chances maintaining elite status at InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) and Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG). Recently I had to choose for a hotel from the Hilton group and to not miss out on any point ever I’ve signed up for their HHonors loyalty program. I enjoyed the hotel I stayed at, but I missed the status benefits I’m used too meanwhile. Last month I had another chance to stay at one of their hotels but I really wanted to see what they offer their status holders. I discovered a status match link and they gladly offered me a temporary diamond status match after sending them my IHG status proof (I could have chosen SPG too, but that didn’t really matter).
Thanks to the diamond status I could enjoy an upgraded room at the Conrad London St. James, some welcome fruits and access to the business lounge where breakfast is included. While I enjoyed the status match I made a mistake; I’ve claimed the status match in November and I had 90 days to complete 8 stays! December and January are the most quiet business travel months in a calendar year. I should have thought about that. So I was not able to complete 8 stays withing the 90 days (which is a little tough in any case to be honest), but glad I had a taste of their pampering in any case.
